چکیده

Intermittent positive pressure breathing with oxygen (hereinafter referred to as I.P.P.B.) has rapidly gained wide clinical use in a variety of cardio-pulmonary diseases. Well established as of value in treating some of these patients in the preand post-operative state, its “routine― use in the post-operative patient has also been advocated by some as a measure to prevent pulmonary complications.―2 The purpose of this controlled study was to evaluate the “routine― use of I.P.P.B. in the patient subjected to upper-abdominal surgery in an effort to clarify its true value in reducing post-operative complications. It was also hoped to determine if I.P.P.B. reduces discomfort and pain by increasing confi dence in deep breathing, secondarily affecting ambulation time and total hospital stay.

Oxygen cost of breathing and weaning process in newborn infants.

Newborn infants may have a high oxygen cost of breathing (OCB) at the time of being weaned from mechanical ventilation. We hypothesized that this increase in oxygen consumption (V'O2) could be reduced by using certain weaning ventilatory modes. We designed a study to assess V'O2 during three weaning ventilatory modes: patient triggered ventilation, synchronous intermittent mandatory ventilation...

The use of positive pressure devices by physiotherapists.

The aim of this paper is to review the indications for use by physiotherapists, such as physiological rationale and the comparative efficacy of intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). A brief discussion of nasal intermittent positive airway pressure is also included. The use of IPPB for post operative prophylaxis has not been supported in ...

Early Nasal Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV) versus Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (NCPAP) for Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) in Infants of 28-36 weeks gestational age: a Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: Early nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) has emerged as a primary modality of respiratory support for preterm infants withrespiratory distress syndrome (RDS). However, 30%-40% of these newborns need subsequent mechanical ventilation. Nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) is a promising alternative to NCPAP, especially in po...

Intermittent positive-pressure breathing after lung surgery.

Intermittent positive-pressure breathing is thought to avoid atelectasis and improve pulmonary function after major lung resections. Since no clear scientific data was available to confirm this, our objective was to determine whether atelectasis can be avoided and if postoperative lung function is improved. Prospective analysis was carried out in 135 patients operated on between 2007 and 2009; ...

The Efficacy of a Protocolized Nursing Care on Nasal Skin Breakdown in Preterm Neonates Receiving Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure

Background: Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) is an effective method of ventilation in newborns with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Using an appropriate nasal skin care protocol is identical to prevention or reduction of nasal skin breakdown in those who receive NCPAP. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of an evidence-based clinical care protocol on nasal sk...
